Overview:
The successful candidate must be able to provide practical, efficient, and high quality legal advice to Chevron Supply and Trading’s various business teams including crude, refined products, carbon, and natural gas trading (on both physical and financial trades), their support functions and business management.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
Negotiate and draft contracts related to energy commodity trading transactions, including physical and financial purchase and sale agreements, offtake agreements, marketing agreements, master agreements, terminal storage agreements and transportation agreements involving ships and pipelines.
Advise clients on general legal issues associated with marketing various energy commodities.
Advise clients on legal issues relating to international and cross-border commodity transactions, including cargo documentation, bills of lading and customs issues.
Provide advice on the structuring of physical commodities and financial arrangements and ensuring that relevant internal stakeholders (e.g. Credit, Treasury and Compliance) are consulted and aligned.
Negotiate resolution of claims and advise on litigation (e.g. failure to perform, shortage, off-specification product, demurrage) associated with trading contracts.
Provide advice and training on compliance with U.S. and E.U. commodities trading regulations (CFTC, EMIR).
Advise clients on legal issues associated with trading on exchanges, such as ICE and CME/NYMEX
Provide advice and training on compliance and risk exposure under relevant laws and regulations including competition law, market manipulation rules, international trade, import/export rules, anti-corruption laws, corporate governance, anti-boycott, and sanctioned parties.
Provide advice to other support functions such as Compliance, Finance, Contracts, Credit, and Public Affairs in the supply and trading context.
Provide advice and guidance to, and collaborate with, lawyers in other Chevron business units, insuring maximum effective use of in-house legal resources.
Consult, in a cost effective manner, with outside counsel when necessary and appropriate.
Required Qualifications:
JD from an accredited law school and admitted to practice law in a U.S. state or the District of Columbia, or otherwise able to comply with requirements for in-house counsel.
7+ years of experience in crude, LPG, natural gas, and refined products trading.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to respond quickly and decisively to client needs in a rapidly changing and fast paced highly competitive trading environment, while at all times emphasizing compliance with all applicable laws.
Ability to effectively manage a high volume of complex and diverse matters, provide support and advice to multiple teams and manage conflicting and evolving work demands.
Capable of working in a team environment and partnering with clients, other in-house counsel, outside counsel and staff.
Sound understanding of corporate and legal structures and associated policies and practices.
Domestic and International travel may occasionally be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated leadership capability.
Renewable or environment commodity trading experience or interest in Renewables.
Relocation Options:
Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.
International Considerations:
Expatriate assignments will not beconsidered.
